Bonus: Myths about Travel Agents

Instead of tips, this edition will be focused on myths about travel agents.

Myth #1:  You have to pay a fee for the services of a travel agent.

Not true!   I have never charged a fee - it would be rare for any travel professional to do that.  We get commissions from the suppliers - your price is the same either way (and may actually be lower because I stay on top of sales and can price match between suppliers).
What's Included on River Cruises?
River cruising is more popular every year.  But which provider is right for you? Compared to Ocean cruising, River Cruises are usually more "all inclusive," but there are differences.  This chart spells it all out, from tipping, to excursions, to wine with dinner and mixed drinks beforehand.

Myth #2:  Travel agents steer you to resorts or cruise lines where they get a higher commission.

Not true! Our business is about getting satisfied customers, and the best way to do that is to use our knowledge to find the perfect fit for you.  And hopefully that leads to repeat business and referrals.  Developing relationships is far more important than a one-time commission bump.

The Trevi fountain in Rome has had a longstanding tradition:
if you stand with your back to the fountain and toss a coin over your left shoulder you are guaranteed a return trip to Rome. Each day thousands of people partake in the custom, which equates to approximately $15,000 a week and almost $1 million a year in collected coins.

Myth #3 :  No one uses Travel Agents anymore.

Not true!  Over 80% of cruises and tours are booked by Travel Agents.  A good agent can help you chose the best resort or cruise (and the right cabin/room and package for you).  And if you are touring somewhere unfamiliar, a travel agent can be invaluable.

7 Tips for Coping with TSA Wait Times

My addition to the airport advice below: if you fly often, invest in an under-the-seat rolling bag. You wouldn't believe how much you can fit in one, and you never have to gate check or pay for overhead space on budget airlines. The bag I bought is 14.5 x14 x 9.

Recent news of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) layoffs and first-hand accounts of missed flights with trending hashtags such as #ihatethewait due to unprecedented security line wait-times has travelers across the country wondering how they can best prepare for this stressful situation at our some of our nation’s busiest airports. Here are some simple precautions and tips for making the best of this ongoing predicament and making sure you don’t miss your flight.

Book the earliest morning flights. While you will still likely encounter dozens of travelers waiting for the TSA lanes to open as early as 4 a.m.,

Myth #4:  Travel Agents have been replaced by the internet.

Not true!  We use the internet, of course, but in combination with all the other knowledge and tools at our disposal. The world of travel online can be a lot like politics  - there is a ton of misinformation out there.  And even if you've carefully researched your vacation, it's possible that I will have access to perks and upgrades through supplier relationships.  You are only one consumer - when you book through an agency, suppliers want our repeat business the same way we want yours.
